The report, titled “Trends in International Arms Transfers, 2023,” highlights China’s growing influence as a major arms supplier, particularly in Asia.
China’s Rise in Arms Exports: According to the report, between 2019 and 2023, China delivered a substantial amount of weaponry to 40 countries. However, the report reveals a concerning trend: over half (61%) of China’s arms exports were directed towards a single recipient – Pakistan.
Pakistan Relies Heavily on China: The report underscores Pakistan’s growing dependence on China for its military hardware. From 2009 to 2013, China accounted for 51% of Pakistan’s arms imports. This figure jumped to 69% between 2014 and 2018, and further escalated to a staggering 82% in the period covered by the latest report (2019-2023). This dramatic increase signifies a clear shift in Pakistan’s arms procurement strategy, with China becoming its primary supplier.
Driving Forces Behind the Trend: The report cites India’s tense relations with both Pakistan and China as a major factor influencing its arms import decisions.
