The Islamabad High Court (IHC) formed a committee comprising heads of the country’s top intelligence agencies–ISI, IB and MI– to investigate the ongoing saga of missing Baloch students. Frustrated by the lack of progress, the court also re-summoned the caretaker Prime Minister, demanding answers on February 28th. These agencies face allegations of being involved in the disappearance of Baloch persons.
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani expressed dismay at the continued disappearances, which have now stretched past two years. Despite accusations against these very agencies, they will be tasked with providing answers, the court declared, emphasizing that no one – including the Prime Minister – is above the law.
Adding further pressure, the IHC announced strict measures for future disappearances within Islamabad. The Inspector General of Police, Interior Secretary, and Counter Terrorism Department chief will face legal action if such cases occur.
The Attorney General’s plea for time, citing a new government’s policy formation, fell on deaf ears. The court pointed out that three previous administrations had failed to bring back the missing students, and further delay was unacceptable.
Advocate Iman Mazari highlighted the ongoing disappearances, underscoring the urgency of action regardless of government changes. Justice Kayani reiterated the committee’s responsibility to deliver answers, irrespective of which government is in power.
This bold move by the IHC reflects mounting pressure on authorities to address the sensitive issue of missing Baloch students. The next hearing on February 28th promises further developments in this ongoing saga.
