General Munir discusses Kashmir with US officials

General Syed Asim Munir discussed the issue of Kashmir with his American interlocuters during his ongoing visit to Washington. According to ISPR, General Munir highlighted the importance of resolving the Kashmir Issue in accordance with international law and relevant UNSC resolutions.

The Indian Supreme Court had recently upheld the Indian government’s decision in August 2019 to abrogate Article 370 of the Indian Constitute which gave a special status to Kashmir. The provision had also by default made Kashmir a disputed territory. Pakistan had fought at least four wars and countless proxy wars to keep the issue of Kashmir burning at a cost of several thousand lives and enormous cost to India. The Kashmir issue, as a former Pakistan Army chief, General Pervez Musharraf, was a jugular vein for the Pakistan Army. The Indian apex court decision had riled the army as well as civilian leadership which had used Kashmir as a handle to camouflage their successive misrules and instances of massive corruption.

General Munir has far held discussions with Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of State, General Llyod J. Austin (Retired), Secretary of Defence, Victoria Nuland, Deputy Secretary of State, Jonathan Finer, Deputy National Security Adviser and General Charles Q Brown, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff. The subjects of his interactions included the Afghan Taliban’s refusal to help in containing TTP, the threat posed terrorist groups on the western border, the Kashmir issue and global conflicts. It is not known whether there were discussions on Pakistan’s support for the Hamas and its relationship with China.
