Pakistan’s federal government has officially appointed Lieutenant General Muhammad Munir Afsar as the chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) for a three-year term. This comes after a caretaker government initially made the appointment in October 2023.

Afsar, the first serving military officer to hold the position, brings expertise in IT and technical management from his time in the Pakistan Army. This appointment follows a reported data breach affecting 2.7 million citizens between 2019 and 2023, which is being investigated by a joint team.

Nadra has faced data leak issues for years. The new chairman will oversee efforts to strengthen data security while leveraging his experience to potentially enhance Nadra’s technical infrastructure.
