The chief of German Army Lieutenant General Alfonas Mais called on Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir at the military’s General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.
According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), matters of mutual interest, regional security and defence cooperation were discussed during the meeting.
Both parties reiterated their desire to further enhance bilateral relations in all fields, said ISPR, adding that the visiting dignitary acknowledged and appreciated Pakistan Army’s successes in the fight against terrorism.
The German army chief also lauded Pakistan’s continued efforts towards bringing peace and stability in the region, said ISPR.
Germany is not only the largest, and most significant, European Union trading partner (by volume and value) for Pakistan, it has also provided significant financial assistance to the latter during catastrophic floods.
Background
Germany and Pakistan established diplomatic relations in 1951, and since then, their military collaboration has evolved in various areas. In the early years, Germany provided military training and equipment to Pakistan’s armed forces. Additionally, there have been exchanges of military delegations to foster mutual understanding and cooperation.
One significant aspect of their military ties was Germany’s role in supporting Pakistan’s defense industry. German companies have supplied military hardware and technology to Pakistan, including submarines and armored vehicles, among other equipment.
Another important element of their relationship is focused on counterterrorism efforts. Pakistan and Germany have collaborated in intelligence sharing, joint military exercises, and capacity building to combat terrorism and promote regional stability.
It is worth noting that the nature of international relations and military cooperation can evolve over time, and there may have been further developments in German-Pakistani military ties since my last update. I recommend consulting more recent sources for the latest information on this topic.
