Director-General (DG): The Director-General is the head of the ISI and holds the rank of Lieutenant General in the Pakistan Army. The DG is responsible for overseeing the agency’s overall functioning, strategic planning, and coordination with other intelligence and security agencies. At present, Lt. General Nadeem Anjum is DG ISI.
Deputy Director-General (DDG): The Deputy Director-General supports the DG in managing the operations and administrative functions of the ISI. He may be a Major General or a Brigadier in the Pakistan Army.
Joint Intelligence X(JIX): It acts as a secretariat of the agency with a Director heading it. It is responsible for general administration and accounts of the ISI directorate. The Director is assisted by five Directors responsible for administration, budget, accounts, transport and miscellaneous work.
Joint Intelligence Bureau (JIB): The JIB is a key operational component of the ISI. It comprises officers from the Pakistan Army, Air Force, Navy, and civilian personnel. The JIB is responsible for collecting and analyzing intelligence related to Pakistan’s external threats and providing assessments and recommendations to policymakers. It is headed by a DDG assisted by five Assistant Directors in charge of Labour, Students, Political Parties, Anti-terrorism and VIP Security. In addition, there are three separate units dealing with economic and political developments in specific regions–1. Section 1 deals with India and the Far East; 2. Section 2 deals with Communist countries and 3. Section 3 deals with East Asia and Africa. It is also responsible for the posting of military personnel in missions abroad. It is not known whether there has been a change in this, there was a Special Wing named Directorate S dealing with Afghanistan with three sub-sections–training and operations, arms distribution and logistics support and training of Afghan refugees and psychological warfare.
Joint Counterintelligence Bureau (JCIB): The JCIB focuses on counterintelligence operations, identifying and neutralizing foreign intelligence activities, and protecting national security from internal threats. It works closely with various law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend spies and informants. It is headed by DDG-External assisted by four directors responsible for –field surveillance and foreign diplomats and foreigners, external (political), external for Asia, Europe and Middle East and Attached to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat. The wing has a unit called Inter Services Security Section (ISSS) which conducts surveillance on ISI personnel. Detachments are located in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Kohat, Rawalpindi, Mardan, Nowshera, Attock, Murree, Jhelum, Kharjan, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Multan, Sargodha, Hyderabad, Muzaffarabad, Tulbul and Gilgit.
Joint Intelligence North (JIN):The unit is responsible for carrying out operations in Indian Kashmir including infiltration, propaganda and other covert operations. It is also tasked with collection of intelligence on Kashmir. It supplies arms and ammunition and training and funds to militant groups.
Joint Intelligence Miscellaneous (JIM): The unit carries out espionage activities in Europe, America, Asia and West Asia. The unit is headed by a Director (Operations) with two Deputy Directors for operations in Europe/America and in Asia/West Asia. They are assisted by eight Assistant Directors of Major rank.
Joint Signal Intelligence Bureau (JSIB): The JSIB is responsible for intercepting and analyzing communications from foreign governments, organizations, and individuals. It gathers signals intelligence (SIGINT) through a variety of methods, including electronic surveillance and monitoring of communications. It plays a crucial role in gathering and analyzing communications intelligence (COMINT) and signals intelligence (SIGINT) to support national security objectives. The unit produces single code for the use of Services. A significant number of officers are deputed from Army Signals Corps. It has offices in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar,each headed by a Deputy Director.
Joint Intelligence Technical Analysis Center (JITAC): The JITAC is involved in technical intelligence collection, analysis, and exploitation. It specializes in acquiring and assessing information from advanced technical sources such as satellites, radars, and electronic devices.
Special Service Group (SSG): The SSG is the special forces unit of the Pakistan Army and operates under the administrative control of the ISI. It is involved in conducting special operations, counterterrorism, and intelligence-gathering missions.
Defence Services Intelligence Academy: The ISI Academy was renamed in 1989 as Defence Services Intelligence Academy and is headed by a Deputy Director (Training). He is assisted by Officer Commanding (Language) and Office Commanding (Technical Training).
Military Liaison Section--It functions under the direct control of ISI and oversees passport and immigration and several other important legal and criminal departments.
The ISI has separate sections on Explosives ,Chemical Warfare and Cyberwarfare.
