The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has urged the armed forces to address internal corruption and for military generals to declare their assets publicly.
“Military personnel live and die in Pakistan. If the generals transfer their assets abroad, it undermines the confidence of businessmen,” stated retired Brigadier Mohammad Musaddiq Abbasi, special assistant to the chief minister on anti-corruption, during a press conference at the information department.
Abbasi pointed out that, in addition to two prominent families, the names of some retired generals were also mentioned in the Dubai leaks. He emphasized that PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan was not implicated in any such leaks.
Abbasi noted that following the Dubai leaks, some individuals claimed to have declared their assets. However, he clarified that if the sources of income were known and the money was transferred illegally, it constituted tax evasion. He further stated that if the sources of income were unknown and money was illegally transferred out of Pakistan, those individuals should be prosecuted under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2012. He stressed the importance of questioning those involved in illegal money transfers to reveal how the money was invested abroad.
Addressing amendments to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws, Abbasi mentioned that the issue was discussed with Imran Khan after his government ended. He expressed concern that the amendments would render NAB ineffective, making it “toothless.”
