Turkish and Pakistani Air Forces Team Up for High-Tech Missile Development

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and the Turkish Armed Forces have announced a significant collaboration on air-to-air missile technology. This partnership promises advancements for both nations’ weapons capabilities, particularly in the realm of Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missiles (BVRAAMs).

The agreement focuses on technology sharing and collaboration between two major players in the air defense industry: Turkey’s TÜBİTAK SAGE and Pakistan’s GIDS. The cooperation will encompass both countries’ ongoing BVRAAM projects – Turkey’s GÖKDOĞAN and Pakistan’s FAAZ-2.

This Turkish missile, along with its sister project BOZDOĞAN (short-range), entered the acceptance testing phase in late 2023. This Pakistani missile family boasts both radar and heat-seeking variants, mirroring the French MICA missiles. Its range reaches 100 km, though this might change for the heat-seeking version.

Turkey’s upcoming GÖKHAN missile, utilizing a ramjet engine, seeks to further enhance range and effectiveness. GIDS aims to adapt FAAZ-2 for ground-based launch, similar to the Humvee-mounted SLAMRAAM concept.

Potential Implications:

Technological Advancement: This partnership could accelerate the development and sophistication of both nations’ BVRAAM programs.
Enhanced Defense Capabilities: Improved air-to-air missiles could significantly strengthen aerial defense capabilities for both Pakistan and Turkey.
Strategic Cooperation: This agreement underscores the growing military and technological collaboration between these two regional powers.
