US Weapons Fueling Pakistan’s Terror Surge

Pakistan grapples with a rising tide of terrorist attacks, with civilians and security forces bearing the brunt of violence. A disturbing trend has emerged: the increasing use of foreign weapons by militant groups.

Security officials suspect these weapons are leftover from the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. While Pakistan claims this “hasty withdrawal” left modern arms in the hands of militants, the US vehemently denies these accusations.

Evidence, however, seems to contradict the US position. Security forces consistently recover US-made weaponry from apprehended terrorists:

M32 grenade launchers and M16 rifles were seized from attackers in the recent Turbat assault.
Similar weapons were found on a captured militant in North Waziristan in January 2024.
US-made weaponry was confiscated from attackers in attacks throughout December 2023, including night vision goggles and assault rifles used in Dera Ismail Khan.
Foreign-made weapons were recovered from militants apprehended at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border earlier in January.

These are just a few recent examples. The trend stretches back to attacks on Pakistani outposts in Chitral and the Mianwali airbase in September and November of 2023, respectively.

Reports indicate the proscribed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is heavily reliant on US-made weaponry. This concern aligns with a EurAsian Times report that estimates around 300,000 US-supplied weapons were left behind during the Afghan withdrawal.

Pakistan faces a complex challenge. While the US denies responsibility, the influx of sophisticated weaponry undeniably empowers terrorist organizations. Addressing this issue will be crucial in curbing the violence plaguing Pakistan.
