A worried China’s military has expressed a strong commitment to working with Pakistan in countering security threats and maintaining regional stability. Colonel Wu Qian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, made this statement during a press briefing on Thursday. The statement comes in the wake of the killing of five Chinese nationals working at a dam site by a suicide attack. It was the second serious attack on Chinese nationals working in Pakistan.
Following the attack, the Chinese companies have suspended civil work on the Dasu and Diamer-Bhasha Dams. Work on Tarbela dam has long been in limbo. Approximately, 991 Chinese engineers working on both projects have stopped operations. Local staff of both projects have been directed to stay home till further orders. The Chinese engineers are still working on the Mohmand Dam in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The Chinese government, which has invested over $60 billion in various infrastructure projects, mostly under the ambitious China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project, has been anxious about the security of its large work force in Pakistan. At some key places, China has employed members of its security services to oversee protection. It is likely to increase its military presence under the guise of security in the coming days.
Colonel Wu emphasized the close relationship between China and Pakistan, describing them as “all-weather strategic cooperative partners, true friends and good brothers.” He further highlighted the affectionate term “iron-clad brother” used by the Chinese people to refer to Pakistan.
The spokesperson pointed to the frequent high-level exchanges and successful collaborations between the two militaries. These collaborations include joint exercises, professional training exchanges, personnel training, and equipment and technology cooperation.
Looking forward, Colonel Wu emphasized China’s willingness to further enhance both countries’ capabilities in tackling security challenges. He specifically mentioned joint efforts in countering terrorism and safeguarding regional peace and stability.
This commitment comes on the heels of the PLA’s participation in Pakistan’s recent National Day military parade. The 36-member PLA Guard of Honor received a warm welcome from the audience, marching alongside the Chinese national flag and chanting “Long live Pakistan-China friendship” in Urdu.
